Des Moines Art Festival 2012

The Interrobang Film Festival had a couple of good films. An Italian film, Il Cacciatore Di Anatre (The Duck Hunter) was good. Too many “frat boy” films like Arrgh! A Pirate Story and The Pact were there. Bathing and the Single Girl was a nice short. Boone’s Lydia and Otto another fun short. Mirrors Are Just Water Specified was one of those thought provoking/no spoken word/just dance films that festivals love. Man of Deeds about the founder of Loras College had it’s moments, as did Clarity, the devastation of meth addiction in a small Pacific Northwest town. Broken and Beautiful was disappointing. Another of those “Christian” movies that was afraid to say Christ. How Rules of the Game got best of show is beyond me (A community wide soccer/rugby game in Britain).

yeah “arrgh! a pirate story” was one of the frattiest movies ive ever seen, reminded me just of college. but in curiosity, what was your favorite and least favorite part?

    • Well Tyler,
If the truth be known, I don’t remember many details about your movie (The mind has a way of blocking out horrible events so you don‘t remember them. Just kidding!). I can’t figure out why you would care what a wannabe film critic from Ames thinks?? Not everyone is going to like what you do. Try being a Bircher!

Besides, I didn’t call it “the worst film ever made”, I just alluded to the idea that your movie would appeal more to 24-year-young-men, then it would to old men. Much in the way that South Park and Family Guy are wildly popular and make millions of dollars, but you wouldn’t catch me watching them in 1.3 million years.

On the Billboard music charts right now at #2 is PSY. I have no idea who that is. That doesn’t make them bad, it just makes me old.

Since the Interrobang Festival, I’ve been to two other festivals and watched dozens of films, I only remember the ones I like. Of the ones that make it to the theaters, I remember ones from the last couple of years like Perks of Being a Wallflower, Jeff Who Lives At Home, Submarine, Young Adult & Winter’s Bone. I never bother with those comic book films like Spider Man, X MEN, Avengers, Hulk, Batman and whatever others, although they are wildly popular with the under 25 crowd.

Bold artists make whatever they want and to heck with the critics. If you want popular, find someone in a different demographic than you, who will give you honest feedback. I know the works of 2 writer/directors, Henry Jaglom and a local guy. They run the whole show. They are King of their production. The trouble is they turn out bad films because they have no advisor who will tell them “that part stinks”, and they keep making the same film over and over.
