The Sunday Register headlines this looming crisis. Common sense and ISU economist Dave Swenson say “baloney”.
My personal take, is that Iowa faces a shortage of skilled reporters. This idea that there is a worker shortage has been in the establishment’s playbook for sometime now. But think for a second people. If we had all these incapable and untrained workers around, then shouldn’t the heads of every community college and state university in Iowa be fired? They obviously haven’t been doing their job.
On one page the press is telling us about the very real mountain of student debt people are piling up, then they turn around and tell us nobody knows nothing. Which is it? Untrained? Or over-trained and unable to get a job?
But! The clincher is, in a free market, where ANYTHING can be had, if you are willing to pay for it, if there was truly a “worker shortage”, wages would be through the roof. It is called supply and demand. In truth, wages have been stagnant for 40 years. There is no shortage.
