In the Sunday Register there is a piece by former Texas Representative Jim Hightower called, ‘The dirty little secret of Keystone XL’. In it he says that the ‘tar sands’ oil that would be coming down a pipeline from Canada is not ‘light sweet crude’, and wouldn’t lessen our gasoline shortage at all, because it wouldn’t be made into gasoline.
Hightower says we would endanger the environment to produce diesel and jet fuel that would be immediately shipped overseas for the benefit of Europe, China and Latin America.
As he says, why pipe this stuff 2,000 miles through six states, endangering water supplies, when there are Midwest refineries much closer? Because Texas is a port for overseas tankers! That’s why. It wouldn’t benefit American consumers at all.
